[\/vc_column_text]<\/div> This Just In<\/p>\n [\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner]<\/div> Children’s Museum of It’s not easy acting like a kid into your Learn more [\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n Architects of Air: 99 times out of 100, we have no Learn more \u00a0 [\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n Sculptor Jim West<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n If there’s one word that sums up the Learn more \u00a0 [\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner el_class=”right-bg1″][\/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text][\/vc_column_text]<\/div> [\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”news-image”] Markowitz Communications were<\/span>\u00a0extremely fortunate to have been brought in by the team at\u00a0Impact Museums<\/a>\u00a0to help promote Pittsburgh’s new Lighthouse Artspace and the exclusive and highly awaited debut of\u00a0“The Original Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit Pittsburgh.”<\/p>\n The MC team (Michael Machosky<\/a>,\u00a0Michael Schroeder<\/a>, and\u00a0Bonnie Markowitz<\/a>) want to thank our friends in the media for joining us (\u00a0TribLive<\/a>,\u00a0Post-Gazette<\/a>,\u00a0Pittsburgh Today Live!<\/a>\u00a0to name a few –\u00a0even though it was very short notice) for our exclusive hard-hat tour of the raw, under-construction space at a vacant warehouse in a little-trafficked section of the North Side. It was a little difficult to imagine the transformation about to take place, but that tiny glimpse of the show was enough to know something special was afoot.<\/p>\n Then, on the same day they were finishing construction, we brought the media back to witness the entire immersive show! That night was the exclusive VIP\u00a0party. where\u00a0we\u00a0invited\u00a0a number of our friends (in the media and otherwise) for an unveiling of the exhibit and the first look at its mesmerizing beauty. And the rest is history!It all resulted in sold-out shows as far as the eye could see.<\/p><\/div>\n [\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n [\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”news-image”] It was the biggest thing to hit Pittsburgh since the 40-foot Rubber Duck cruised up the Ohio River — a 90-foot floating Van Gogh head was spotted hovering above Flagstaff Hill in Oakland.<\/p>\n Everybody wanted a pic with the giant\u00a0 Van Gogh balloon (ears fully intact). It wasn’t easy to get even more attention for the Immersive Van Gogh exhibit that had already been sold out for weeks, but this did the trick — plus, the offer of free tickets for the first 100 who got up early and snapped a shot of Vincent and posted it to social media at 7 a.m.<\/p>\n Plus, every TV station and newspaper in town (and beyond) found room for this striking visual in their news coverage — how many giant Van Gogh heads hovering over Pittsburgh do you normally see–?<\/p>\n photo credit: Steve McWilliams Photography[\/vc_column_text][vc_btn title=”Read about it on post-gazette.com” color=”violet” css_animation=”fadeIn” css=”.vc_custom_1639606591131{margin-top: 20px !important;margin-bottom: 60px !important;}” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.post-gazette.com%2Fae%2Fart-architecture%2F2021%2F12%2F10%2Fvan-gogh-hot-air-balloon-pittsburgh-flagstaff-hill-oakland%2Fstories%2F202112100103|target:_blank”][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column css=”.vc_custom_1622224631465{background-color: #e2e2e2 !important;}”] [\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”news-image”] It was April Fool\u2019s Day, but the joke was on Klavon\u2019s Ice Cream Parlor, Pittsburgh\u2019s oldest (since 1923) and most beloved purveyor of frozen treats. They were preparing for the Spring and Summer busy season \u2013 but could not find enough employees. With 16 positions to fill and no applicants, owner Jacob Hanchar turned to us.<\/p>\n The pandemic changed everything, of course, but as things were finally starting to open up and vaccinations were becoming commonplace, a worker shortage was becoming obvious for many restaurant and retail businesses. It was getting hard to get people to come back for low-wage, stressful jobs dealing with the public.<\/p>\n So we conferred with Klavon\u2019s owner Jacob Hanchar, and asked: \u201cWhat if you offered employees $15 an hour (plus tips)?\u201d That\u2019s generally considered the standard for a living wage (though it can obviously vary by state and city). Pennsylvania has been stuck at a\u00a0$7.25<\/strong>\u00a0minimum wage since 2009.<\/p>\n Jacob ran the numbers and concluded that it would work. We thought if we did it first and publicized it \u2013 even issuing it as a sort of challenge to other businesses to do better would get some attention.<\/p>\n “The Graceland of Pittsburgh ice cream knows how sweet a living wage is,”\u00a0said Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m happy to see Klavon\u2019s, a city treasure, set the bar for a livable wage,\u201d chimed in Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto.<\/p>\n Almost every\u00a0local<\/a>\u00a0media<\/a>\u00a0outlet<\/a>\u00a0covered Klavon\u2019s in some fashion, and it was the talk of the town. Soon afterward, a\u00a0Pittsburgh Business Times<\/a>\u00a0story about companies attracting employees with better pay appeared with Klavon\u2019s as the lead example.<\/p>\n Suddenly, the story went viral on Twitter and was being quoted and Tweeted by writers and thought leaders across the political spectrum. Britain\u2019s\u00a0Daily Mail<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 one of the most-read websites in the world — picked it up. MSNBC scheduled an interview with Hanchar via Zoom on Stephanie Ruhle\u2019s\u00a0morning show<\/a>\u00a0to discuss his business expertise. Everyone from Bernie Sanders to actress Debra Messing tweeted about it to their millions of followers.<\/p>\n Perhaps most importantly, Klavon\u2019s became flooded with thousands of job applications.
