From Lava Rocks to London: A Journey Rooted in Hawai\u2018i<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Natasha\u2019s story begins on the Big Island, where barefoot childhood days were spent running across black lava rocks  and making flower leis. That island upbringing shaped the foundation of who I would become as an adult. Once you\u2019ve experienced the beauty of Hawai\u2018i and the aloha spirit, it never leaves you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But life took a turn when her family moved to England. Boarding school brought structure, cold weather, and culture shock. \u201cI never felt fully English,\u201d she says. \u201cI always knew I\u2019d return to Hawai\u2018i.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Years later, after completing her Waldorf teacher training in London, she did just that \u2014 moving to O\u02bbahu with the intention of bringing a more holistic approach to education for local children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waldorf Education & Eco Values \u2014 A Natural Fit<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Natasha spent the past year gaining experience as a teacher at the Honolulu Waldorf School, an early childhood program grounded in rhythm, nature, and gentle learning. \u201cI was excited to see how Hawaiian culture and Waldorf education would intertwine together,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t push academics early on,\u201d she explains. \u201cWe sing, paint, and play \u2014 all using natural materials like beeswax crayons and woollen dolls. There\u2019s no plastic, no screens, no overstimulation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This approach resonates deeply with the same values behind eco kayak tours in Hawai\u2018i \u2014 connection to nature, slower living, and respect for local culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBoth teaching and hospitality are about care,\u201d she says. \u201cAt school, I help children feel safe. At work, I help travelers and locals feel seen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working on O\u02bbahu\u2019s west side has been especially grounding. \u201cThere\u2019s so much authenticity here,\u201d she says. \u201cThe women I work with are strong and real. It\u2019s not performative  \u2014 it\u2019s just life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Returning to Island Life Isn\u2019t Always Easy\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite being born in Hawai\u02bbi, moving back after years living in  England was a bigger adjustment than Natasha expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was used to cooler weather, forest walks, quiet country life,\u201d she admits. \u201cComing back meant re-learning the rhythm of the islands.”<\/mark><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

She\u2019s honest about the challenges of building a life here, especially as a teacher. Still, the sense of purpose keeps her anchored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want to be of service and respectful to the community and aina here.\u00a0 \u201c<\/mark><\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For me, that means practicing small acts of intention\u2014like wearing mineral-based sunscreens when entering the ocean and being mindful of anything that could harm the reef and marine life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You get what you give; being kind and considerate toward the locals, especially those in W\u0101ianae who are struggling with rising living costs and homelessness, goes a long way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
