On a quiet Wednesday night in Honolulu\u2019s Chinatown, you might hear deep rhythms pulsing from the walls of NextDoor Club. If you look past the decks, you might spot a soft-spoken artist with decades of drawings behind him \u2014 and a second life just beginning in sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meet Vince (@bkpr2025)<\/strong>, an Indigenous artist, DJ-in-training, and father to the late graffiti artist Matt Smith<\/strong>, also known by his tag, BHIVER<\/strong>. What began as a private sketching habit has become a tribute to grief, legacy, and creative resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI started taking art classes, and everyone in the art class was so much better than me, I quit,\u201d Vinny says with a knowing smile. \u201cSo I said, I\u2019m just going to go on my own.\u201d And he did\u2014quietly making art on his terms, without needing validation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But years later, it was Matt\u2014known for his powerful graffiti and street art in Seattle and Honolulu<\/strong>\u2014who gave him a reason to pick up the pen again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBefore he passed away, he said I should start drawing again. So I started drawing. That\u2019s where I got this kind of iteration of my drawing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matt, or BHIVER, passed away at 23. But his energy lives on through Vinny\u2019s new work\u2014visuals that echo the boldness of street art, the softness of memory, and the fire of a father\u2019s tribute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community Influence: Chinatown, Beats, and Belonging<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Vinny\u2019s creative journey has recently expanded beyond drawing into DJing. On Wednesday nights from 8:30 PM to 1 AM, he spins beginner sets at NextDoor <\/strong>Club, one of Chinatown\u2019s cornerstone venues for underground music and arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEveryone\u2019s really nice, super open,\u201d he shares. \u201cNot a lot of criticism, really. You just do your thing, and people are really accepting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although he hasn\u2019t yet displayed his artwork during performances, NextDoor often features visual art on its projector wall behind DJs. \u201cI haven\u2019t gone there yet,\u201d he says, \u201cI\u2019m just learning the controller.\u201d But it\u2019s clear\u2014this, too, is art in motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creative Process: No Plan, Just Flow<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Vinny\u2019s artistic approach is refreshingly simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cStart drawing. Comes out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s no agenda or expectation\u2014just intuitive expression. Whether on paper or through sound, his work reflects a sense of presence, of making something honest with what you have in the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advice for Emerging Artists: \u201cDon\u2019t Get Discouraged\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Vinny offers wisdom for artists at any stage of the journey:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJust keep going. Do your work. Sometimes it\u2019s gonna drop away \u2014 don\u2019t worry about it because it\u2019ll come back. But I would just say keep working on your art. Don\u2019t get discouraged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a huge process. It\u2019s a big universe. Just keep going because it\u2019ll come back stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For anyone who\u2019s paused their creative path, his words are an invitation to return\u2014without judgment, and without needing to be \u201cbetter than the class.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
